Contractor bid guide

How Many Contractor Quotes Should You Get?

Three bids is common advice, but the useful number depends on how defined the scope is and whether the proposals are actually comparable.

Two bids can expose questions

If both contractors are qualified and the scope is detailed, two proposals can reveal major differences in assumptions, materials, and payment terms.

Three bids usually improve context

A third bid helps distinguish a one-off pricing structure from a pattern and makes it easier to spot an outlier or repeated omission.

More bids are not automatically better

Four or five can help on large projects, flips, or uncertain scopes, but each additional contractor adds comparison work. Normalize the scope instead of collecting unrelated estimates.

Use the decision as the starting baseline

When you choose a contractor, preserve the accepted scope, price, allowances, and payment milestones. CheckMyBids is the pre-hire side of the workflow; CheckMyRemodel is where the awarded project continues when changes and payments start.
